Off-Road Vehicle Safety Reminder
Off-Road Vehicle Safety Reminder
With the arrival of warmer weather, the use of off-road vehicles (ORVs), including ATVs, dirt bikes, and side-by-side vehicles, increases throughout our region. While these vehicles can provide recreational opportunities, they must be operated responsibly and only in areas where their use is permitted. Recent incidents across British Columbia have highlighted the serious injuries that can occur when ORVs are operated unsafely or in unauthorized locations. RCMP continue to remind riders that improper use of off-road vehicles can result in injuries, fines, vehicle impoundment, or other enforcement actions.
Under British Columbia's Off-Road Vehicle Act and Regulation, operators are required to follow safety requirements such as wearing an approved helmet and ensuring their vehicle is properly registered when required. Riders should know where they are permitted to operate, respect private property, stay on designated trails, and always ride in a safe and courteous manner. The RCMP also recommends riding with others when possible, informing someone of your route, and obtaining proper training before operating an ORV.
